Could Weapons, the new horror film by Barbarian director Zach Cregger, be part of a larger, shared horror universe? A new viral marketing site might be the clue fans were waiting for.
Set to release August 8, Weapons follows a schoolteacher (played by Julia Garner) who arrives at work one morning to find all her students have vanished — while every other child in the school is safe. Panic erupts across the town of Maybrook, and the teacher becomes a suspect in the eyes of parents and neighbors.
To promote the film, Warner Bros. launched a viral website called MaybrookMissing.com, styled as a fan-made message board. Among disturbing videos and rumors, a curious link appears on the homepage:
“Underground Prison Discovered in Rental Home.”
That’s no coincidence. The article mentions Tess Marshall, the heroine of Barbarian, and describes her involvement in a chilling investigation — referencing the events of that movie.
Though Barbarian and Weapons are produced by different studios (20th Century Studios and Warner Bros.), this cross-reference has fans wondering: Is Cregger building his own horror universe?
