The 53rd Gramado Film Festival, held in the Serra Gaúcha region, officially opens on Friday (15) with the screening of “O Último Azul”, directed by Gabriel Mascaro.
Winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, the feature follows Tereza (Denise Weinberg), a 77-year-old woman who escapes a compulsory retirement colony in a dystopian Brazil set in the Amazon. Rodrigo Santoro also stars in the film.
Despite opening the festival, Pernambuco will not have titles in the Brazilian Feature Competition this year. In the short film category, only “As Musas”, directed by Rosa Fernan, represents the state among the 12 nominees.
The Recife Film Commission, established in April 2025 to support and facilitate audiovisual productions in the city, will attend the festival through the Municipal Department of Economic Development. Its mission is to promote partnerships, attract investment, and strengthen the local creative industry.
Curated by Caio Blat, Camila Morgado, and Marcos Santuario, this year’s lineup includes six feature films showcasing diverse themes, styles, and regions of Brazil, along with 12 short films and four documentaries, offering a vibrant portrait of contemporary Brazilian cinema.
