Director Natalie Erika James brings a fresh perspective to the Rosemary’s Baby universe with Apartment 7A, a chilling prequel starring Julia Garner and Dianne Wiest. Released on Paramount+, the film expands on the mysterious past of Terry Gionoffrio, a young dancer whose ambition and vulnerability make her an easy target for the sinister forces lurking in the Bramford.
Set in 1960s New York, the film delves into Terry’s life as a struggling performer who is taken in by the enigmatic Minnie and Roman Castevet, played by Wiest and Kevin McNally. The production brings to life a richly immersive period setting, blending historical aesthetics with an atmosphere of creeping dread.
Developing Terry’s Character
James shared that she loved the idea of Terry as an ambitious Broadway dancer, contrasting her journey with that of Rosemary in the original film. “Terry’s character kind of inhabits both Guy and Rosemary,” she explained, referencing the original movie. “She is both a vessel for satanic spawn and an agent of her own bargain with the devil.”
James praised Julia Garner’s portrayal of Terry: “She’s incredible. Her intensity, vulnerability, and fire brought so much depth to the role. Julia committed completely, taking on dance rehearsals and singing lessons to embody the character.”
Creating 1960s New York
Filming primarily in London, James worked with production designer Simon Bowles to recreate the gothic atmosphere of The Bramford, modeled after The Dakota in New York. The team meticulously matched set details, down to furniture pieces from the original film. Filming in Wilton’s Music Hall, a historic London venue, added a layer of authenticity, with the theater serving as a symbolic extension of the film’s themes of ritual and secrecy.
Dianne Wiest’s Transformation
Wiest stepped into the iconic role originated by Ruth Gordon, but James emphasized the importance of making it her own. “We found inspiration in Mae Questel’s voice, known for Betty Boop, which had a sweet but slightly unhinged quality. It was the perfect fit,” said James.
Apartment 7A is now streaming on Paramount+, offering a fresh take on the Rosemary’s Baby mythos while standing as a haunting tale of ambition, trust, and betrayal.
