Meet Kiros, Mads Mikkelsen’s villainous pack leader of Disney’s Mufasa prequel

Mikkelsen and director Barry Jenkins share everything you need to know (barring spoilers) about the big bad of the “Lion King” precursor.

Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins describes Mufasa: The Lion King as a mythic origin story. Set to premiere in theaters on December 20, the film serves as a prequel to the beloved The Lion King, delving into Mufasa’s journey as an orphaned lion cub destined to become the revered king of Pride Rock. Alongside him is Taka, who will later take on the name Scar.

A standout feature of this new production is the introduction of the villain Kiros, voiced by Mads Mikkelsen. Kiros, the leader of a genetically distinct pack of lions, brings a naturalistic and menacing presence to the story. Jenkins describes him as a character who challenges and shapes Mufasa, embodying a form of leadership and power that also influences Scar’s transformation.

The central narrative is framed by Rafiki, Timon, and Pumbaa, who share Mufasa’s story with Kiara, Simba and Nala’s daughter. Mufasa and Taka’s journey takes them through wild and dangerous landscapes, culminating in decisive confrontations with Kiros and his pride.

In addition to its compelling storyline, the film is highlighted by groundbreaking animation. The voice actors performed their lines in front of cameras that captured facial expressions, which were then integrated into the characters’ CG designs, adding an unprecedented level of realism to the digital portrayals.

The soundtrack, another essential element of the Lion King universe, also takes center stage. Mikkelsen, making his singing debut, describes his musical performances as intense and emotionally charged, reflecting Kiros’s complex personality. Jenkins praises Mikkelsen’s work, saying, “He makes the songs delicious and visceral.” Mufasa: The Lion King not only expands the mythology of the franchise but also explores profound themes of leadership, choices, and legacy. This new chapter promises a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience for both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
