Osgood Perkins, the modern master of horror behind The Monkey, is set to release his mysterious new film Keeper in November 2025. The movie reunites him with Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany, but so far, Neon’s marketing has kept everything tightly under wraps — the eerie trailer offers no plot details, and the promotional campaign has left audiences guessing.
During a conversation at San Diego Comic-Con with Comic Book, Perkins hinted at the movie’s unsettling theme:
“It’s the worst part of being male. Call it the patriarchy, call it misogyny, call it toxic masculinity… it’s a depiction of our worst selves as men. Sometimes, we have to look at ourselves and think, ‘Ew, gross.’ Keeper is that look.”
Maslany added her own perspective:
“In some ways, it’s also a look at women, gross — if we’re being binary about it. But it’s more about those instincts you ignore, the ways you know something but gaslight yourself… which is patriarchy. Never mind, it’s all about men. Men suck.”
In an unusual move, Keeper marks only the second time Perkins has directed a film without writing the script himself — Gretel & Hansel being the first. Even more unconventional, the production began before the script was finished. Writer Nick Lepard was developing the story in real time during filming, as Perkins, Maslany, producers, and crew were all simultaneously scouting locations, planning scenes, and improvising along the way.
Perkins describes the process as “an expressionistic painting” — chaotic, risky, but creatively alive. With its secrecy and raw approach, Keeper promises to be one of 2025’s most intriguing horror releases.
