Nearly three decades after the beloved comedy Happy Gilmore first hit theaters, Adam Sandler is bringing the iconic character back in Happy Gilmore 2, premiering on Netflix this Friday.
Inspired by his childhood trips to the golf range with his father in New Hampshire, Sandler originally developed the story with his college roommate and writing partner, Tim Herlihy. The original 1996 film—famous for its wild golf swings and comedic take on sports culture—became a cult favorite, despite initial mixed reviews.
Now 58, Sandler reunites with Herlihy for the sequel. This time, Happy is a retired golf legend with five children, including one played by Sandler’s real-life daughter, Sunny. When tragedy strikes and Happy hits hard times, he’s pulled back into the game—not to chase fame, but to defend the sport he once rebelled against.
The film also features a mix of new stars and athletes like Travis Kelce, Bad Bunny, and Scottie Scheffler, along with heartfelt tributes to the original cast members who have passed away. Co-star Benny Safdie plays the founder of a wild new golf tour that threatens the integrity of the sport.
Sandler says making a full-blown comedy again feels like going back to his roots: “There’s nothing better than making people laugh. That’s why we started this journey in the first place.”
