In the growing world of screenlife thrillers, Don’t Log Off attempts to hook viewers with a mysterious disappearance during a virtual birthday party — but its slow start may test your patience.
Set on March 21st, 2020, in the early pandemic days, the story follows Sam’s friends as they throw her a surprise party via video call. Moments after the celebration begins, Sam steps away to answer the door and never returns. What follows is a tense investigation, as one by one, her concerned friends begin to vanish while still connected online.
Directed and written by Brandon and Garrett Baer, the film stars Kara Royster (from whose computer screen we view the entire movie), Ariel Winter, Khylin Rhambo, Luke Benward, and others. Though it opens with intrigue, the pacing drags for much of the runtime, filled with repetitive arguments and frustrating character decisions.
The film shines in its final act, delivering a tense, well-executed climax. Still, the journey may not feel worth it to all viewers. Fans of movies like Unfriended: Dark Web might enjoy it more than casual audiences.
Don’t Log Off is now available for digital rental and purchase on Amazon Prime Video.
