Relive History with Steve McQueen’s Powerful New Drama, ‘Blitz’
Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen kicked off the 2024 London Film Festival with “Blitz”, an intense and moving drama set during World War II. Premiering at the iconic Royal Festival Hall, McQueen emphasized the significance of showcasing the film in London, the real-life backdrop of the 1940 bombings.

Blitz follows the story of Rita, played by Saoirse Ronan, a London mother who sends her young son George, portrayed by newcomer Elliott Heffernan, to safety in the countryside. However, George embarks on a perilous journey back home to reunite with his family amidst the chaos.

Elliott Heffernan, aged 11, shared his remarkable experience of starring in the film, noting his leap from a school play to the red carpet. “It was a massive adventure. I want to keep it normal,” he said, when asked if he’d told his friends about his big break.

McQueen captures the resilience of Londoners during the Blitz, the intense aerial bombings by the German Luftwaffe. Ronan described the film as a testament to the strength of community: “It’s about people coming together against all odds, finding lightness and levity even in the darkest of times.”

With a stellar cast that includes Harris Dickinson, Stephen Graham, and Benjamin Clementine, Blitz is already being hailed as a standout of the festival.

Don’t miss this gripping tale of courage and humanity—coming to select theaters on November 1 and streaming on Apple TV+ from November 22.
