I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025): A Stylish Reboot That Blends Legacy, Trauma, and Slasher Fun

The 2025 reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer is now playing in theaters and reimagines the classic slasher story with a new generation, slicker kills, and deeper emotional stakes. According to co-writers Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) and Sam Lansky, the film belongs to the genre of “beautiful people doing terrible things and being punished for them” — think Prom Night or Jawbreaker.

This time, a group of wealthy friends — Ava, Danica, Milo, Teddy, and Stevie — cause a cliffside accident, then flee and cover it up with the help of Teddy’s powerful father. A year later, they’re hunted by a new Fisherman killer who delivers violent, theatrical murders. “A reference for us was Fincher’s Se7en,” Lansky explains, pointing to the heightened intensity of the deaths.

The film emphasizes the emotional connections among the group, much like the original did with Julie, Helen, Ray, and Barry. Stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprise their iconic roles for the first time since the 1998 sequel.

“We wanted this to feel like it was happening to your friends,” Robinson says. The new cast was chosen to bring the same bright energy as the original, without duplicating characters.

Unlike many legacy sequels, this film doesn’t require knowledge of the original. “Everything is grounded in our new story,” Robinson says. Easter eggs are there for longtime fans, but newcomers will still enjoy the ride.

With a projected $17 million domestic opening and a budget of $18 million, the film is tracking similarly to the 1997 original. Though comparisons to Scream are inevitable, Robinson remains neutral: “We love those movies, but we want this one to stand on its own.”
