James Sweeney’s Twinless walks the fine line between romantic comedy and psychological thriller but never settles into either. What begins as a tender, humorous exploration of grief evolves into something darker, more unpredictable — and all the more fascinating. Dylan O’Brien is a revelation in the dual role of Roman and Rocky, identical twins separated by death and reunited, in a way, through memory and obsession.
Roman, lost after his twin’s passing, joins a hilariously awkward support group for grieving twins, where he meets Dennis (played by Sweeney himself). What starts as an offbeat friendship soon deepens into something stranger — equal parts sweet, perverse, and compulsively watchable. The two navigate grief, guilt, and unresolved questions, including Roman’s regret over growing distant from his gay brother, which subtly draws him closer to Dennis.
Despite the emotional undercurrents, the film is consistently funny — packed with clever dialogue, inventive cinematography (including De Palma-style split screens), and surreal moments. O’Brien delivers a performance that’s heartbreakingly raw yet never overwhelms the film’s sharp comedic pulse.
Sweeney follows his acclaimed Straight Up with another bold, form-bending film that refuses easy categorization. Twinless proves that even the most personal grief can spark the weirdest, most wonderful stories.
