At the Annecy International Animation Festival, DreamWorks Animation revealed 30 minutes of thrilling footage from The Bad Guys 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2022 hit based on Aaron Blabey’s book series. The film is set to hit theaters on August 1, 2025.
Director Pierre Perifel, co-director JP Sans, and producer Damon Ross introduced the preview, noting that work on the sequel began even before the first movie was finished. Inspired by a viewer who wondered, “How will they top this?”, the creative team focused on bolder visuals and a more ambitious storyline. While the original drew inspiration from Ocean’s Eleven and Reservoir Dogs, the sequel embraces Mission: Impossible-style action spectacle.
Plot overview:
The original gang — Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson), Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos), and Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina) — is trying to live clean with Governor Diane Foxington (Zazie Beetz), a former thief. But they get dragged back into crime by the Bad Girls: Kitty Kat (a snow leopard), Doom (a raven), and Pigtail (a wild boar).
Highlights of the footage include a flashback heist in Cairo, a high-speed chase scored by a new Busta Rhymes track, a comedic prison visit to returning villain Professor Marmalade, and a wild lucha libre wrestling scene. In true sequel fashion, the Bad Guys are framed while trying to do the right thing.
The Bad Girls blackmail the team into one last job: stealing a rocket ship from a tech mogul reminiscent of Elon Musk. In an explosive climax, the Bad Guys jump between chunks of ice flying off the shuttle — a visual feat animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks.
