The iconic Jurassic World franchise, worth $5.5 billion, is returning to its dinosaur park origins with a brand-new star-studded cast.
Jurassic Park was released in 1993 and became a pop culture classic, earning $978 million, but its sequels struggled both critically and commercially. Over the last decade, Universal successfully revitalized the Jurassic Park franchise with a new trilogy, with each Jurassic World film grossing over $1 billion.
In August 2024, Universal announced that a new sequel, Jurassic World: Rebirth, would be released in theaters on July 2, 2025.
A trailer released this week teases a storyline where a team infiltrates the island that once held the original facility from the first Jurassic Park film.
Rob Mitchell, Director of Theatrical Insights at film industry research firm Gower Street Analytics, told Business Insider that Jurassic World: Rebirth is likely to make over $1 billion, just like its predecessors. Mitchell noted that the franchise’s popularity is strong enough to overcome potential negative reviews, citing that the previous film, Jurassic World: Dominion, grossed over $1 billion despite receiving a poor 29% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The casting of Mahershala Ali and Scarlett Johansson was also highlighted by Mitchell, who called them “the biggest stars the franchise has ever hired.” He believes their involvement will drive interest in the film.
Set five years after Jurassic World: Dominion, Jurassic World: Rebirth takes place in a world where cloned dinosaurs coexist with humans after being released from an amusement park. By now, dinosaurs live in isolated areas due to Earth’s hostile ecology.
A team of scientists and experts discovers that three of the largest dinosaurs hold the key to a revolutionary drug that could benefit humankind. They embark on a mission to secure DNA samples from these creatures, but things take a turn when their operation clashes with a civilian boating expedition. The team finds themselves stranded on an island with a shocking, sinister discovery that has been hidden from the world for decades.
