Fans of the “Smile” horror franchise might have more reasons to grin. Director and writer Parker Finn is already envisioning potential sequels following the success of the second installment, which hit theaters on October 18, 2024, two years after the first film became a surprise blockbuster.
Starring Naomi Scott as a pop star tormented by sinister grinning demons, “Smile 2” expands the eerie lore established in the original film. Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere on October 14, Finn shared his excitement for the future: “There’s so many exciting roads that Smile could go down.”
Finn emphasized the versatility of the franchise, telling The Hollywood Reporter: “Smile has the opportunity to tell all different kinds of diverse stories and explore new worlds that the entity can invade.”
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Finn expressed hope for a third installment, saying: “If we are lucky with how audiences connect with ‘Smile 2,’ I think the sky’s the limit.” He also hinted at his ambitions to make each film wilder than the last, envisioning a lineage of progressively more intense and offbeat entries.
The director has other projects lined up as well, including a planned remake of the 1981 horror film “Possession”, with Robert Pattinson reportedly involved as a producer.
For “Smile 2”, Finn aimed to create a sequel that felt unique and worthwhile, leaning into the audience’s existing knowledge from the first film while challenging their expectations. As he told Den of Geek: “I love the idea of making the audience question if they’re part of the evil.”
While the sequel is already drawing attention at the box office, fans eagerly await confirmation of a third installment, hoping the chilling smiles will continue to haunt them.
